Just saw In A Better World. Very intense movie, especially if you have sons. At times I could barely watch I was so afraid. If you haven't seen it, go soon, before it disappears. It really looks great on the big screen. Molly Green shoots another video of an acoustic version Dancing In The Dark, in candle light with friends ... Lelia Brousard is through to the next round to get onto the cover of Rolling Stone. If you like her, go and vote for her. As far as I can see she's been around for 5 years and doing very well ... Rolling Stone vote I watched Ivan's Childhood last night and was suddenly transported back to film school at the end of the 70s. It's such a sad loss that he's gone. Who knows what he'd be making if he was here today. Just to imagine this is exciting. If you haven't seen it and you love the cinema of dreams, rent it and be inspired. Tarkovsky was brought onto the film when it was already in production and the director had dropped out. He reinvented it. Fresh out of film school, he created a truly astounding work. The dreams weren't in the script. The feeling that reality is ultimately a product of dream rather than the other way around is astounding. His sister had told him that his first word to his mother was "coo-koo" ... Look at the opening below and you will see how this is the heart of the film.
I briefly met him when he came to the National Film School. It took all my courage to ask him how he'd worked with the production designer. He dismissively said that his designer merely did what he told him to do. Up until then I'd completely hero worshiped Tarkovsky, my heart sank ... But as the years pass and I see more of his work and see how personal his work is, it's easy to see what he meant. He truly brought his soul to every thing he did and surrounded himself with people that wouldn't get in the way. Here's the opening of the film. Someone thought this was a good idea ....
This is my friend Heidi Jo Markle's new film. It's her first big outing where she takes the main solo producer credit. It got great reviews from The New York Times and many other places, and went wider this weekend. We saw it the other day and it certainly lives up to the hype. I'm excited to be developing my next screenplay for her. Now it's all hands on deck, so we can strike while the iron's hot. Past few weeks I've really been enjoying listening to radio drama on the BBC website. Meanwhile in the states there's This American Life - not drama but a great magazine show with stories that always really engage, amuse, and sometimes really move one.
Saw this last night. If you get the chance, it's one of the best movies I've seen in quite a while. |
