We lived in the same house in Wood Green for a while before I went to university and stayed in touch through the early eighties, then I moved to the states and we drifted apart. He was amazingly talented, fiercely inspiring and for a while there, a great friend. 56 is way too young to say goodbye. He took this picture of himself after he graduated Art School. I miss this man.

Thanks Martin. Yes he did like you. I remember feeling that if he liked you that was something great because his friendship was not easily won. Maybe that's what made his celebrity portraits work.
